How to Read eBooks on Your Android Device

Not Sure How to Read eBooks on your Android Phone?

There are literally dozens of eBook reader apps available for Android phones, but for me, one of the easiest is Google Play Books. 

Simply download the Google Play Books App (Here) and install it on your phone.

Once you have it on your phone, you then have a number of options:

  1. You can buy eBooks (and audiobooks) from the Play Books store – there are also any number of ree books that you can download and read.
  2. You can then read the books on the app.
  3. You can upload the eBooks you buy from the Indie Bookshop to your library.
  4. You can rent e-versions of certain textbooks

Buying a Book from Google Play Books

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app.
  2. Search for the ebook (or audiobook) you’d like to read.
  3. Select an ebook and then tap the price.
  4. Depending on the book, you may also be able to read a sample. Tap Free Sample.

Reading eBooks on your Android phone

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app.

  1. Select a book.
  2. Tap the centre of the page.
  3. Swipe to quickly flip through pages.
  4. To jump to a chapter, bookmark, or note, tap Contents Contents.
  5. To change font, text size, and line spacing, tap Display options.
  6. To change brightness or background colour, tap Display options and then tone.
  7. To rotate your screen, or adjust based on time of day, tap Settings Settings.
  8. To go back to your ebook, tap the center of the page again, or tap Back.
  9. You can change the font, text size, and jump to chapters when you read ebooks.

Upload eBooks that you bought from Indie eBookshop to your phone.

Upload PDF & EPUB files

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home and then Profile and then Play Books Settings and then Enable PDF uploading.
  3. Download a PDF or EPUB file on your device.
  4. Open your Downloads or Files app.
  5. Find the file.
  6. Tap More and then Open With and then Play Books or Upload to Play Books.
  7. You can find uploaded files in your Library and then Uploads.

You can also upload books to your Google Play books account on you PC or laptop, and if your phone is synced with your Google account, the books will show up in your phone app as well.

Rent textbooks & books

You can also rent digital versions of some textbooks and books on Google Play Books.

Important: Your rental period will start as soon as you make your purchase, even if you haven’t opened the book.

  1. On your device, open Google Play Books
  2. Browse textbooks for rent or search for a specific book.
  3. Click the book you want to rent.
  4. Check whether it says “Rent” next to the price. You’ll also find how many days you can rent the book.
  5. To rent, click the price and check out.
  6. To find how much time you have before the rental expires, go to your library and check the book’s cover.
  7. Rentals that have ended say “Expired.” If you aren’t finished with the book, you can rent it again or buy the textbook. You’ll still be able to find your highlights and notes.
